Igartubeiti is a typical Basque farmhouse (baserri in Basque, caserío in Spanish) that has been open to the public since 2001. It is an excellent example of the wooden architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries – the Golden Age of the Basque farms.

For years the Basque farmhouse was one of the most significant features of Basque life. In traditional, rural society, the “baserri” was the key stone not only to economic production but also to social organization.

Even where it has ceased to be economically productive, the cultural concept of the Basque farmhouse has carried over into different traditions and continues to be a powerful symbol of Basque identity today.

This farmhouse boasts a fully-functioning lagar (apple press) from the 16th century.

Visitors will have the chance to see the lagar, and will be able to enjoy the aroma of pressed apples, grass, drying skins and smoke from the hearth. The tour also invites visitors to come and explore the dimly-lit kitchen and the stables. The wooden floors in the attic creak under our footsteps.

The Interpretation Centre next to the “Caserio” plays an important role in allowing us to relive the history of Basque farmhouses over more than one thousand years. By listening to the family and neighbours of Igartubeiti, we discover how the old farmhouses grew and evolved, how their inhabitants lived and worked, their relationships with each other, their beliefs, what they produced, what they ate, what they did for fun and the hardships they faced.
